identified and disusse the appropriate conventions for your task

i am going to analyse diffrent media text relating to our music video project. i will look at diffrent bands that have influenced our choice to make a music video. a typical converntion on rock music videos are; high key lighting, empty deserted places and the band playing there instruments. examples of these conventions the futures "the boy who cryed wolf" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BB9rSMWQP2M
it is very typical for rock videos to be very expermental breaking typical narrative conventions such as showing the narrative not in chronological order, and not seeing the band at all. example metallica "all nightmare long" in this video we see a clear narrative of beggining, middle and end but we do not see the bands. the actions potreyed in this text reflect the musics pace and tone. theme of death and violence run throughout.
it is very typical for rock bands to have scary videos and to use the aggresive music to reflect it, e.g. slipknot "wait and bleed" violent and aggrestive partys are shown alot such as in videos as ; avenged sevenfold "bat country" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHS3qJdxefY&ob=av2nand slipknot "duality" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fVE8kSM43I&ob=av2e - slipknot duality

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1zCN0YhW1s - slipknot wait and bleed

typical mise en scene of rock bands seems to be dark colours such as black against bright colours such as red. example green day "american idiot" there is an empty wearhouse dressed in black shirts/ t-shirts with red ties on. the american flag has been changed to if there brand identity by it being green, there is a strong brand identity of this video, showing the logo of a hand holding a grenade. it is also a typical convention to show anger and suggest or show violence.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VkmEZs_Kcms - green day amrican idiotgreen screen is not as popular in rock than as in R&B videos such as kanye west "golddigger" but they are used in videos such as nickleback "gotta be somebody"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vwNcNOTVzY&ob=av2e - kanye west gold diggerhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CF0zjO76Cig - nickleback gotta be somebody

lyrics are sometimes shown by the visuals of the video, three days grace "i hate everything about you" show this. the video clearly shows the meaning to the song. it shows people and drug use to show the anger of the lyrics and vague stroylines of diffrent people dealing with anger and violence.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdyCf_V--3A&ob=av2n - three days grace i hate everything about you

inconclusion the are many way we can make our music video either breaking or following the typical conventions. by us using a rock song we are open to try and experiment with diffrent techniques and narratives.

Research

From watching a variety of music videos I come to a conclusion that there are three main types of videos used to represent a band. Standard, Experimental and Chroma Key videos.

The most popular music video used is the standard music video. Standard video consist of music and imaging working alongside each other in an attempt to give across a narrative. Usually we see some sort of representation of the protagonist having an amazing life or we see a band/artist playing and then clips of a narrative e.g. Eminem ft Rhianna “I love the way you lie:.

Another clear example is The Black Eyed Peas “I Gotta Feeling”. This is a really good example of a typical music video because it include the needed amount of close ups, while giving a clear narrative of the stereotypical representation.

Chroma Key - a green screen is use of different images and frames which are composited together
e.g. Kanye West “Gold Digger”
The entire video is shot infront of a green screen and in all shots there is a use of green screen editting for example the use the magazine covers.

Experimental - less strict, conventions can be followed or completely ignored, very creative.
e.g. Gary Jules “Mad World”
This video is extremely experimental because the entire video consists of one shot that pans around.

For my groups music video, we are thinking of making a video that uses green screen and portrays a small narrative. We plan to do an experimental video that follows some of the normal conventions in music videos as well as different conventions. We want to show a narrative within our video and shots of the band performing with editting effects.

As you can see above 10 of the artist match the same genre of music. 10 artists who have released rock albums have been in the top 20 most sales, so i can tell that my genre of music is a very popular and extremely successful genre. This extremely valuable information because it tell me that my genre has a wide range of fans throughout the world.

1)ACDC : Back In Black
2)Pink Floyd : The Dark Side of The Moon
3)Meatloaf : Bats Out Of Hell

Bat_out_of_Hell.jpg

These are three of the albums covers who are in the top 20 most sales list. From these designs especially with ACDC and Pink Floyd there is a lot of black used to illustrate the front cover. The Meatloaf album cover is different but it still has a lot of dark colours are used in the illustrations. This shows me that to appeal to fans of the rock genre i should include either a simple picture with a black background for example just the band logo or have a detailed illustrations on the front cover in order to reflect upon the band and the artist.
